Peru

The climate in Peru is highly diverse, ranging from the arid Pacific coast to the high Andes and the humid Amazon rainforest. Climate change is intensifying major hazards such as glacial retreat, droughts, floods, and heatwaves, which directly affect communities and their livelihoods. Melting Andean glaciers threaten freshwater supplies for millions of people and reduce hydroelectric power generation. Unpredictable rainfall and prolonged droughts are undermining agricultural productivity, threatening food security and rural incomes. More frequent and severe floods damage infrastructure, displace families, and heighten the risk of waterborne diseases. Coastal areas face increasing risks from sea level rise and erosion, endangering fisheries, tourism, and ecosystems. These impacts strain Peru’s economy, biodiversity, and the resilience of its people.
