Africa

Being the second largest continent on earth, Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change, as it faces a high exposure to its impacts and low adaptive capacity. Global warming is increasing extreme temperatures, as well as heatwaves. Heavy precipitation events are increasing throughout the continent, while average annual precipitation only increases in parts of eastern and southern Africa and decreases in the northern regions. Some parts will experience greater flooding and other regions will suffer from an increase of droughts caused by decreased rainfall and heat. Agriculture is the biggest economic sector and especially put at risk by different impacts of climate change. Climate change leads to yield loss, lower soil quality, the spreading of crop and livestock diseases and salinization through coastal flooding caused by sea level rise. The African population is also endangered by water scarcity and an increase in vector and water-borne diseases, as well as infrastructural damages through increasing extreme weather events.
