Asia
Asia is Earth’s largest and most populous continent. Global warming trends and extreme temperature events are being observed over the whole continent. Rainfall increases in northern and central Asia, whereas it is declining in the South. Even though average rainfall decreases in South Asia, extreme rainfall events increase in occurrence and intensity. Especially during the Monsoon season these extreme rainfall events happen more often and over longer periods of time which can result in devastating flooding events. Climate change impacts are affecting every region of Asia, as the population faces water resource scarcity. In particular coastal areas are high-risk areas, as sea level rise is resulting in significant losses of coastal ecosystems and threatening communities living there with the risk from flooding. Especially Southeast Asia is suffering from more frequent extreme events like storms and typhoons. Changing climatic conditions are also affecting the livelihoods of many Asian people through agricultural yield losses and increasing losses in fishery. Human health is put at risk through food insecurity and direct effects of extreme weather events. Being the continent that includes most countries with the most people living in vulnerable low-lying areas, Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions to the ongoing climate change.
